Setup
Portable Mode & Uninstalling
Run Gyaanmitra from a folder, with settings beside the app. And if you ever want it gone, here is exactly what to delete.
Portable mode
By default, Gyaanmitra keeps your settings, keybindings, extensions, and
Gyaanmitra AI configuration in a profile folder for your user, outside the
install location.
Portable mode changes that. Everything lives in a data folder next to the
Gyaanmitra binary. The app and your configuration can sit together on a USB
drive, or you can copy them to another machine as one unit.
Get the archive build
Portable mode needs the .zip (Windows), .tar.gz (Linux), or an
unpacked application (macOS). The installer will not do this, because
installers write to fixed system locations.
Create a data folder
Extract the archive, then create a folder named exactly data next to
the Gyaanmitra executable. That is next to Gyaanmitra.exe on Windows,
inside the .app bundle's contents on macOS, or next to the gyaanmitra
binary on Linux.
Launch normally
Gyaanmitra notices the data folder when it starts and switches to
portable mode. You do not set a flag. You will see confirmation in
Help → About.
Portable mode and extensions with native dependencies
Some extensions compile native modules for the operating system and CPU they were installed on. If you move a portable install between machines with a different operating system or CPU, reinstall those extensions after the move.
Where Gyaanmitra stores things (non-portable install)
| What | Windows | macOS | Linux |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings & keybindings | %APPDATA%\Gyaanmitra | ~/Library/Application Support/Gyaanmitra | ~/.config/Gyaanmitra |
| Extensions | %USERPROFILE%\.gyaanmitra\extensions | ~/.gyaanmitra/extensions | ~/.gyaanmitra/extensions |
| Gyaanmitra AI model keys & config | %APPDATA%\Gyaanmitra\User\globalStorage | ~/Library/Application Support/Gyaanmitra/User/globalStorage | ~/.config/Gyaanmitra/User/globalStorage |
Fully uninstalling
Removing only the application (your platform's uninstaller, or deleting
Gyaanmitra.app or the extracted folder) leaves the folders above in place.
That is on purpose, so a later reinstall restores your setup. To remove
everything:
Remove the configuration directories
Delete the paths listed in the table above for your platform.
Revoke any API keys, if you're done with Gyaanmitra AI entirely
If you added a model provider API key just for Gyaanmitra and you will not reinstall, revoke it from that provider's dashboard as well. See Privacy & Data.
