Gyaanmitra AI
Plan & Act Modes
Two ways to work with Gyaanmitra AI, picked per conversation. Think it through first, or make the change and approve as you go.
Plan mode
Plan mode is for work that is not small: a feature that touches several files, a refactor you want to understand before you commit to it, or a bug whose cause is not obvious yet. In Plan mode, Gyaanmitra AI:
Investigates first
It reads the relevant files, searches the codebase, and, if that helps, runs read-only commands to see how things behave now. It does not change anything yet.
Proposes a plan
It lists the files it intends to touch and the approach it will take, in plain language, before it writes any code.
Waits for you
You can ask questions, ask for a different approach, or approve the plan as it is. Nothing is written to disk until you do.
Act mode
Act mode is for smaller changes you already understand, where a full plan would only slow you down. A typo, a style tweak, a straightforward function. Gyaanmitra AI makes the edit and shows it as a diff. You can accept it, reject it, or ask for a revision on each change.
Approval still applies in Act mode
Act mode skips the planning step. You still approve each change. File edits show up as diffs you review. If Gyaanmitra AI wants to run something in the terminal that is not clearly safe, it still asks first. See Tools, Rules & Context for what counts as clearly safe.
Switching modes
The mode selector sits just above the chat input. You can switch in the middle of a conversation. A common pattern is to start in Plan mode for a tricky bug, then move to Act mode once you and Gyaanmitra AI agree on the fix and only need it applied.
Choosing a mode
| Use Plan mode when… | Use Act mode when… |
|---|---|
| The change spans multiple files or modules | The change is confined to a line or a function |
| You're not sure what's causing a bug yet | You already know exactly what needs to change |
| You want to review an approach before any edits happen | Speed matters more than a review step |
| You're asking Gyaanmitra AI to design something new | You're asking Gyaanmitra AI to apply something you've already decided |
