Gyaanmitra AI
Models & Providers
Connect your own provider key in the Gyaanmitra desktop app. Gyaanmitra does not host inference.
Bring your own key
Every chat, enhance, and autocomplete request goes to a provider you
connect. There is no hosted Auto catalog and no guna_ key. Your provider
bills you at their API rates.
You control cost
Your provider bills you directly, at their usual API rates. Gyaanmitra does not add a markup or a subscription fee on top.
You control which model
Use a fast, inexpensive model for quick questions and a more capable one for hard problems. You can switch per conversation.
No single point of failure
If one provider is down or rate-limited, switch to another. You do not have to wait on anyone else.
Your keys stay with you
In the desktop app, keys live in the operating system's secret store. They are never written to Firestore.
Desktop: connecting a provider
Open the Providers tab
Open Gyaanmitra Settings → Gyaanmitra AI → Providers. Only providers you connect appear in the model picker.
Connect a hosted, local, or custom provider
Popular providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, OpenRouter, Vercel, Anaconda Desktop, and more) have a Connect button. Show more providers opens the full catalog. Custom provider accepts any OpenAI-compatible, OpenAI Responses, or Anthropic Messages base URL.
Sign in or paste a key
OpenAI can use an API key or ChatGPT Pro/Plus device login. GitHub Copilot can use a token or GitHub login (including Enterprise). Local servers such as Ollama and LM Studio can leave the key empty. Keys are checked, then stored in your operating system's secret store. They are not written to settings JSON or workspace files.
Pick a default model
Connected provider models appear in Gyaanmitra AI → Models. Set a default
for new conversations, and override it for one conversation from the same
selector. Stored gyaanmitra/* or gyaanmitra-auto/* values are ignored.
Different models for different jobs
A common setup is a fast, inexpensive model as your default for everyday questions and small edits, with a heavier reasoning model one click away for the harder problems.
Local and self-hosted models
If your provider entry is an OpenAI-compatible HTTP endpoint, including a local inference server, point Gyaanmitra AI at its base URL the same way you would set any other custom provider.
You can hide providers you do not use from Disabled Providers, then
enable them later. Environment variables such as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY or
OPENAI_API_KEY show as connected from your environment. You cannot
disconnect those in the UI.
The public catalog is at GET /api/gateway/providers. Optional signed-in
helpers live at /api/gateway/providers/validate, /models, and /chat
when the desktop app or another client needs a server-side fetch.
Switching providers mid-project
There is no lock-in step. Change your default model, add a second provider, or remove a key from Providers and Models. It takes effect on your next message. You do not restart.
