Remote Development

Remote Development

Work on another machine, such as a cloud VM, a Raspberry Pi, a container, or a computer behind a firewall. The window still feels like the project is local.

Remote Tunnels

Gyaanmitra can open a secure tunnel to any machine it is running on. From a different Gyaanmitra window you can reach that machine's files, terminal, and running processes. You do not set up port forwarding or a VPN.

1

Start a tunnel on the remote machine

Run Turn on Remote Tunnel Access from the Command Palette on the machine you want to connect to (a home server, a cloud VM, a Raspberry Pi).

2

Sign in to authorize the tunnel

A one-time device sign-in links the tunnel to your account, so only you can connect to it.

3

Connect from anywhere

From a different Gyaanmitra install, run Connect to Tunnel… and pick the machine you started a tunnel on. Its files and terminal are then available the same way a local folder would be.

Tunnels persist across network changes

A tunnel stays up if your local machine changes networks (a different Wi-Fi, or a VPN). Open a new Gyaanmitra window and connect again. You do not have to restart anything on the remote machine.

SSH

If you already reach a machine over SSH, install the SSH remote development extension from Open VSX. You can open a folder on that machine with the same Explorer, terminal, and debugging you get for a local folder. The Gyaanmitra window stays on your computer. The files, processes, and extensions run on the remote host.

WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

On Windows, install the WSL extension to open a folder that lives inside a WSL distribution. That helps when the project's tools expect Linux and you are on a Windows machine. See Gyaanmitra on Windows for when this is worth setting up.

Dev Containers

If the repository defines its own container (a .devcontainer folder with the image, tools, and extensions the project needs), install the Dev Containers extension. You can open the project inside that container in one click. Everyone who opens it gets the same environment, whatever is installed on their own machine.

Remote development and Gyaanmitra AI

Gyaanmitra AI works the same way when the workspace is local, tunneled, over SSH, or inside a Dev Container. It reads files, runs commands, and drives the Integrated Browser in whichever environment the window is connected to.
