IntelliSense
Completions that know the context, parameter hints, and short docs as you type, from the language server for the file you have open.
How it works
As you type, Gyaanmitra asks the language server for that file (TypeScript, Python, whichever applies) what could come next. The list is ranked by how relevant each suggestion is. Press Ctrl + Space to open it yourself, or keep typing and let it appear.
Parameter hints
Type an opening parenthesis after a function name and you see its parameter names, types, and docs, still on the line you are writing.
Quick Info on hover
Hover a symbol to see its type signature and doc comment. This works for your own code and for library code you have imported.
Built-in language intelligence
JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, HTML, CSS/SCSS/Less, and Markdown all get IntelliSense with nothing to install. Gyaanmitra ships their language servers. Other languages get the same experience once you install the matching extension from Open VSX. Python, Go, Rust, Java, C/C++, and many others have one that is actively maintained.
Why suggestions sometimes take a moment to appear
The first time you open a project, the language server parses your
dependencies so it can see the whole codebase. A large node_modules
folder or a big Python virtual environment can take a few seconds. Later
edits are quick, because that work is cached.
Tab completion and inline suggestions
Besides the completion list, Gyaanmitra can show inline "ghost text" as you type. Accept it with Tab. That helps with predictable edits, such as finishing an import path or a line that matches a pattern elsewhere in the file. If you have installed an extension that offers AI inline completions, those suggestions show up the same way, styled so you can tell them apart from the built-in ones.
Tuning IntelliSense to your taste
A few settings worth knowing. Open Settings (Ctrl + ,) and search for the name:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
editor.quickSuggestions | Whether suggestions pop up automatically while typing, or only on demand |
editor.suggestSelection | Whether the first suggestion is pre-selected for Enter/Tab to accept |
editor.parameterHints.enabled | Toggles the parameter-hint popup entirely |
editor.wordBasedSuggestions | Whether plain-text word matches from the open file are offered as a fallback |
